Rose and Crown:
English pub in Palo Alto is friendly spot for game of darts and some tasty bar food, washed down by a beer or two from its exceptional selection
It’s beer, more beer and (almost) nothing but beer at Palo Alto’s Rose and Crown. But what a selection — local and European brews, light summer wheat beer, dark ales you practically have to chew.
This British-style alehouse, tucked away off a parking lot on Emerson Street, serves classic pub food, plus darts and soccer for entertainment. It’s a cozy spot on a cold night, but there’s a patio if you need a smoke or want to enjoy the weather.
The vibe: Very laid-back. The decor consists of appropriately aged walls and furniture, plus soccer banners and beer ads. As for dress, as long as you’re wearing clothing, you’re good.
The crowd: A mix of grizzled locals and Stanford grad students, plus after-work types. Some drop in on their own to grab a beer and dinner. Electronic devices are rarely in use — read the paper or chat with the barkeep if you’re solo.
Best seat: One of the stools lining the bar. You’ll need to arrive early — before 6 — to get a spot, especially if there are two of you.
Killer app: The Stilton cheese, pear and walnut plate (a steal at $8.95) is big enough to provide two a light dinner. It goes well with a lightly spiced Hefeweizen ($6.25/half liter). A classic ground beef and vegetable shepherd’s pie ($10.95) is filling comfort food; it’s great with a hoppy ale such as the Russian River Brewing Co.’s double IPA Pliny the Elder ($7/pint).
Signature drink: Any of the four or five rotating beers that are currently on tap, to include North Coast Old No. 38 Stout and Palo Alto Brewing Rye.
Also on tap: Cider, on tap and in
bottles.
Bonus: Happy hour runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, when all draft beers are $1 off regular price.
