Deadly earthquake

A front-page photo shows a soldier carrying an elderly man for medical treatment after an earthquake hit Yunnan province on Sunday. At least 221 people were killed by the 6.5magnitude quake, the strongest to hit the province in 18 years. Tremors toppled more than 12,000 homes, and more than 2,500 soldiers joined the relief operation.

Editor’s note: The death toll rose to 615 on Thursday, with 114 people missing. The region is prone to earthquake­s. In 1970, a quake in Yunnan killed 15,000 people, and another killed more than 1,400 in 1974. In 2012, 81 people died and 821 were injured in a series of quakes in the region. Factory explosion

Another front-page photo shows a man giving a DNA sample to be used to indentify a relative who was likely killed Saturday during an explosion at an auto parts factory in Kunshan. At least 44 people died and 187 were injured.
