Grandson found

A front-page photo shows a beaming Estela de Carlotto speaking to reporters about her grandson, who she has long been searching for. “This is a day of glory,” she said. Her now 36-year-old grandson was taken from her daughter while she was a prisoner of the 197683 military dictatorship. Ignacio Hurban, a pianist and composer who is director of a music school, consented to a DNA test taken after having doubts about his identity. The test proved that he is the son of Carlotto’s daughter, Laura. She was among the tens of thousands who were “disappeared” during the military regime.

Editor’s note: The announcement was major news in Argentina, a country still haunted by the “dirty war” era of the 1970s. Carlotto is the nation’s most prominent human rights activist who has long pressed for the search of children taken under similar circumstances as her grandson. She is the founder of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, a group that believes about 500 children were seized and given to couples who supported the government.
