1 _ Police shooting: An 18-year-old recent high school graduate was shot dead Saturday afternoon by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo. Tensions flared after Michael Brown was shot outside an apartment complex in the St. Louis suburb and several hundred people filled the street. His mother, Lesley McSpadden, said the incident occurred as her son was walking to his grandmothe­r’s home. Emotions cooled in early evening after mourners gathered for an impromptu prayer circle. Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said his department turned the investigat­ion over to the St. Louis County Police. 2 _ Slain Christie aide: The daughter of a prominent New Jersey Republican Party leader who was killed Thursday by her husband before he committed suicide says her parents were experienci­ng “enormous stress” in recent weeks. Lorraine Bramhall tells the Daily Record of Parsippany that John Bramhall believed his wife of 54 years was suffering from dementia. Joan Bramhall was a member of Gov. Chris Christie’s transition team. The former Morris County clerk was well known in Republican political circles and retired in December. Christie hailed Bramhall as an “outstandin­g public servant but an even better person.” _ 3 Farm tragedy: Authoritie­s say a 15-year-old Pennsylvan­ia boy was driving a piece of farm machinery when it overturned in a manure pit, killing him. The Lancaster County coroner says Jonas King was operating a skid loader Saturday morning when it flipped into the pit on his family’s farm in Leacock Township. Police say the boy was completely submerged when emergency personnel arrived and it took rescue crews more than an hour to pull him out. 4 _ Carry-on cash: A 78-year-old Florida woman tried to fly on an internatio­nal trip from Detroit Metropolit­an Airport with almost $41,000 in cash hidden inside her girdle, bra and carry-on bag, federal authoritie­s said. A complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Detroit said the Clearwater woman was trying to board a flight April 2 to the Philippine­s with her daughter. She initially said she had $200 in cash but submitted a form declaring she had $1,200, prompting questions and a search by Customs and Border Protection officers. The woman told authoritie­s that she had recently sold her home for $120,000 and had planned to carry a portion of the money with her. _ 5 Zoo director dies: The executive director of the Sacramento Zoo died unexpected­ly during an overseas trip, officials said Saturday. Mary Healy died Thursday while traveling to the Galapagos Islands, zoo spokeswoma­n Tonja Candelaria said. Healy, 61, had left a port in Ecuador by ship when she suffered a cerebral aneurysm. She was later declared brain dead and then suffered a massive heart attack, Candelaria said. Healy was headed to the Galapagos Islands on business and vacation to see animals in the wild and their habitats.
