Timbuk2 Madrone Cycling Laptop Backpack

- — Jill K. Robinson, travel@sfchronicle.com

The best travel gear is multifunctional. With few exceptions, bringing along a one-hit wonder means you can say goodbye to packing light. This Timbuk2 backpack can be used as a cycling bag, a pack for city streets, or even for hiking. The weatherproof base and flap corners help keep your gear dry. Molded back panels allow ventilation, whether you’re out riding or sprinting through the airport. The main pocket has a padded laptop sleeve and room for a change of clothes. A lined zip pocket holds sunglasses, and stretch pockets fit water bottles. Reflective strips are only visible when you need them. A fun bonus: The on-strap bottle opener may make you a hero at the end of the day. What we liked: The side access zipper allows you to swing the pack around to get in and out of it, rather than having to take it off your back. Not so much: The bag’s twill gray and blue colors have bright colors just under the surface. If you’re all about big and bright on the outside, you’ll need to add some color. Vitals: Timbuk2 Madrone Cycling Laptop Backpack, $129 from www.timbuk2.com.
