Radio’s Edward Bear
Ben Fong-Torres’ July 6 Radio Waves column brought flashbacks to a noble time. When I read “Edward Bear,” I was in my grad school apartment forcing myself to stay awake to hear him, as he had the late-night shift. What programming! And I loved his voice. I checked online and am glad that his career carried on well and he is doing good for good causes.
I was a hip listener since the 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. beginnings on KMPX when FM was really underground. That first step always began with a raga. Fab!
As for radio today, I am a subscriber to KCSM jazz and catch the news on KCBS (and my nephew Jeff Bell — his media name).
Fong-Torres does a great service monitoring radio doings.
