Archie Daniel Spivey

1926 – 2014

-

After 88 years of kindness, laughter, and devotion to his family, friends and wonderful neighbors, Dan died peacefully at his home in Colma, in the loving care of his step daughter Sylvia and her husband Joe, losing his battle with brain cancer on Sept. 7.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Dan was the only child of his now deceased parents, Archie D. and Eva Spivey. His beloved wife Elaine M. Spivey and lifelong friend, William (Willy) Baird preceded Dan in death.

Dan is survived by loving stepdaughters, Sylvia (Joseph) Leverett and Christyne McCain and their respective families which include six grandchildren and several great grandchildren, all of whom live in Indiana; his loving companion of many years, Karen Rhymer and his “stepchildren” Dawn (Edward) Neff and Eric (Tracie) Rhymer. Uncle Danny, as he is lovingly referred to, is also survived by Lindy McDonald, Connie Baird, Stephanie Clark and Rick Baird, children of his dear friend Willy B, and Michelle Zeugin, the daughter of a long time next door neighbor.

Dan began his career as a United States Merchant Marine, based out of San Francisco, retiring in 1969 after 25 years of service. He then went to work for the Department of Public Works, City and County of San Francisco for 19 years, retiring as a Senior Stationary Engineer in 1988. He was a proud veteran of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam.

Dan was an avid reader and history buff and a huge baseball enthusiast…go Giants. He loved to discuss politics and always had a joke to share. His sharp mind and quick wit made for lively political discussions. He loved animals and was a big supporter of SPCA. He cared deeply about our veterans, people less fortunate, the rights of American citizens and supporting the community as evidenced by his generous lifetime support of the SS Jeremiah O’Brian liberty ship, Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, St. Anthony’s, the NRA and the SF Zoo.

Those twinkling blue eyes, wry smile and his kind and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a gem in life and is surely shining brightly in the heavens now.

At his request there will be no funeral service and his cremated remains will be buried at sea by the Marine Firemen, Oilers, Watertenders and Wipers Association.
