Montgomery’s status still undetermined

- By Tom FitzGerald Tom FitzGerald is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

Stanford’s leading receiver, Ty Montgomery, remains a question mark going into Tuesday’s Foster Farms Bowl, head coach David Shaw said Saturday.

Montgomery suffered a sprained shoulder early in the Cal game and may still not be close to 100 percent.

Shaw said he would be reexamined after practice Sunday at CCSF. “I was hoping we could make a decision before that,” he said. “He’s cleared a lot of steps up until now. But we’ve got to give him a little bit of contact and see how he handles that. If there’s any kind of a setback, we can’t let him play.”

If that’s the case, Montgomery’s Stanford career is over. In addition to being the top receiving threat this season, with 61 catches for 604 yards, he is the school’s career kickoff return leader with 2,133 yards.

Maryland’s top receiver, speedy Stefon Diggs, will definitely play after being out with a lacerated kidney.

No loss in excitement: The Stanford players are just as excited as they were when they were preparing for Bowl Cham- pionship Series bowls the past four years, Shaw said. “Our guys, in particular at the end of the season, fought extremely hard to get themselves here,” he said.

The Terps were about to make their Alcatraz visit. “I think I may take a couple of our guys and lock them up out there,’’ Maryland coach Randy Edsall joked.

Pit stop by Terps’ jet: On the Christmas Day flight to the Bay Area, Maryland’s charter flight had to make an unscheduled landing in Salt Lake City to

refuel because of strong headwinds.

The exposure factor: Moving from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Big Ten this year was a no-brainer, Edsall said. “It definitely has helped recruiting,” he said. “The exposure you get from the Big Ten Network — every game is on TV, and they’re talking about football 24/7 all season. In the ACC, you’re on ESPN3 sometimes.”
