Torres to stay in Italy

-

Officials for English Premier League team Chelsea said striker Fernando Torres will join Italy’s AC Milan on a permanent basis in the January transfer window.

Torres joined Milan on a two-year loan deal in August, and Chelsea said on its website Saturday that he will complete a permanent transfer on Jan. 5.

Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in January 2011 but failed to replicate his previous scoring form at Stamford Bridge. However, he did help Chelsea win the Champions League and the Europa League in 31⁄2 seasons at the club before being replaced by Diego Costa for this campaign.

Chelsea did not disclose a transfer fee.

Crystal Palace fired Neil Warnock after only four months in charge, making him the first EPL manager to lose his job this season.

Warnock’s second stint in charge of Palace ended with the London club in the relegation zone after just one win in 12 EPL matches. Warnock’s assistant, Keith Millen, will be in charge for Sunday’s game against Queens Park Rangers as caretaker manager.

Former Chile goalkeeper Roberto Rojas, 57, has been hospitalized in Brazil because of a urinary infection and chest pain.

A hospital statement said Rojas is undergoing intravenous antibiotic treatment.

Sailing: Wild Oats XI took line honors in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race for a record eighth time Sunday, holding off a late challenge from American super-maxi Comanche in its big race debut.

Australian-owned Wild Oats crossed the finish line to complete the 70th edition of the blue water classic in an unoffical time of 2 days, 2 hours and 2 minutes, about 10 nautical miles ahead of Comanche.

The 100 foot super maxi has taken line honors in the race eight times in 10 years.

In winning Sunday, it broke the record of the Australian yacht Morna — later named Kurrewa IV — which took line honors seven times between 1946 and 1960.
