(Betsy) Elizabeth Ann Sotzin Miller

Betsy left us on December 19, 2014, after a very accomplish­ed life. Born November 10, 1925, at the George Washington Hospital, Washington, D.C. to Heber A. Sotzin, Ph.D. and Ann Henretta Sotzin on their eighth wedding anniversar­y.

The family moved to San Jose, CA in 1929 where Dr. Sotzin was a Department Head at San Jose State College. Betsy graduated from Willow Glen Grammar School, Vice President of the Student Body; member of the first graduating class of Abraham Lincoln High School, San Jose; and in 1947, graduated from Stanford University, majoring in Psychology and Sociology.

Betsy was affiliated with Delta Iota Chi and Order of Rainbow for Girls; at Stanford, a member of the yearbook, The Stanford Quad; Chi Omega Sorority; and a Red Cross Nurses’ Aide at the Palo Alto Hospital. Following graduation, she joined the Roos Brother’s Retail Executive Training Program in San Francisco. She became summer manager of Tahoe Tavern Shops, and a member of the New York buying office.

In 1949, Betsy married Jack E. Miller, who preceded her in death after 52 years. They resided in St Francis Wood for 48 years.

An active volunteer in numerous organizati­ons and past president of the Commodore Sloat Mother’s Club; San Francisco/East Bay Pan Hellenic (Sorority) Conference; San Francisco Volunteer Center; St. Francis Wood Women’s League; and The Century Club of California.

In 1967, Betsy was appointed Director of Volunteer Services at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital, San Francisco; and in 1983 became the Director of Volunteer Services at St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center.

Betsy served as President of the Northern California Directors of Volunteer Services; the Chairman of the California Hospital Associatio­n Directors of Volunteer Services; and President of the American Hospital Associatio­n’s Director of Volunteer Services.

Relatives include son, John A. Miller; daughter-inlaw Kathleen Buckley; and granddaugh­ters Lauren and Erin Miller of Greenbrae, CA.

Memorial donations in Betsy’s honor may be sent to Stanford University Medical Center Auxiliary; High School Volunteer Scholarshi­p Fund; 300 Pasteur Drive, Room H1130E; Stanford, CA 94305-2200.
