Duke heats up, hands Virginia 1st loss

Quinn Cook, Tyus Jones and No. 4 Duke got their biggest shots to start falling just in time.

Jones scored 17 points, Cook had 15 and both made critical three-pointers in the closing minutes, fueling a game-closing 16-5 run that gave the Blue Devils a 69-63 victory against No. 2 Virginia, ending the Cavaliers’ 21-game home winning streak.

“We were getting the same looks. It was just a matter of the ball going in the basket,” Jones said.

Cook hit three times from long range in the final 4:38 and Jones hit the clincher with about 10 seconds left, capping a dramatic turnaround from earlier shooting woes.

The Blue Devils (18-3, 5-3 ACC) became the first team to shoot 50 percent against the Cavaliers this season (50.9 percent).

Virginia (19-1, 7-1) started the second half with a 16-4 burst and led by 11 with just under 11 minutes to play before some ill-advised shots, turnovers and Duke’s blister- ing shooting turned the tables.

BYU 78, Santa Clara 57:

Andrew Papenfus made his season debut in Santa Clara’s loss after having surgery to remove a benign brain tumor Oct. 6, playing the final four minutes and finishing with a rebound and a steal. ... Przemek Karnowski scored 17 points and Kyle Wiltjer added 15 as the host Bulldogs (22-1) racked up their 15th straight victory. ... Nick King had 13 points off the bench for Memphis (13-8).

#5 Wisconsin 74, Iowa 63:

Frank Kaminsky had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the visiting Badgers (18-2, 6-1 Big Ten), who won their fifth straight against the Hawkeyes (13-8, 4-4).

#7 Villanova 68, DePaul 55:

Ryan Arcidiacon­o scored all 18 of his points in the second half and the visiting Wildcats (19-2, 6-2) moved a half-game ahead of Providence atop the Big East. ... After a 3-0 start, DePaul (11-12, 5-5) lost for the fifth time in its past seven conference games.

Dame 72:

Guard James Robinson hit a runner with 12 seconds remaining to give the Panthers the lead for good in an upset of the visiting Irish (20-3, 8-2 ACC). ... Notre Dame’s Steve Vasturia took an open three-pointer that clanged off the rim on the Irish’s next possession. Jamel Artis made two free throws and Robinson stole the inbounds pass to seal it for the Panthers (14-8, 4-5 ACC).

Perry Ellis had 16 points and 12 rebounds and the host Jayhawks (18-3, 7-1 Big 12) beat their state rival for the 49th time in the past 53 meetings.

Andrew Chrabascz scored 30 points and the visiting Bulldogs (16-6, 6-3 Big East) overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 4:21 of regulation and won in overtime.

San Diego 77, USF 69:

Johnny Dee scored 20 points and the host Toreros (12-11, 5-6 WCC) used a strong second-half finish to push past the Dons (9-14, 3-8). ... Matt Glover knocked down a jumper with 6:05 left to give USF a threepoint lead, 61-58. But Dee converted a pair of free throws and Christophe­r Anderson got to the hoop for a layup to give the Toreros the lead and San Diego closed the game by going 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. ... Kruize Pinkins scored 23 points to lead the Dons.

The host Lobos (14-7, 6-3 Mountain West) scored the game’s first 12 points and Deshawn Delaney finished with 15 points against the Spartans (2-19, 0-9), who missed their first nine shots. ... Jaleel Williams had 14 points and 10 rebounds for San Jose State.

San Diego 74, USF 69:

Zhane Dykes scored 15 points, but the Dons (13-9, 4-7 WCC) sustained their fifth conference loss by five points or fewer, falling to the visiting Toreros (17-4, 8-3).

St. Mary’s 53, Pepperdine 49:

Davyn Galland hit a goahead jumper in the final minute and added two free throws with 17 seconds left as the Gaels (16-6, 9-2 WCC) won their sixth straight conference road game.

Lexi Eaton had 27 points and 13 rebounds as the visiting Cougars (17-9, 9-2 WCC) slipped by the Broncos (7-13, 2-9), who were led by Nici Gilday’s 22 points.

Ta’Rea Cunnigan’s 23 points led the host Spartans (9-11, 3-6 Mountain West), who had two chances to win in the final seconds but couldn’t come through.

Jamie Weisner scored 21 points, including five three-pointers, and the host Beavers (19-1, 9-0 Pac-12) improved on their best-ever season start by routing the Trojans (11-9, 3-6).
