A Bay Area native, Pernell works every other weekend at West Hollywood’s Bungalow Salon (and more often during awards season). Otherwise, he works out of his appointment-only S.F. studio and occasionally flies by special request to meet clients.

PRICE OF A CUT: $110.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HIM: After years working on major magazine editorials and fashion weeks, Pernell now styles local fashion shows for big-name designers including Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass and Carolina Herrera.

WHY HE DIVIDES HIS TIME: “During the dot-com bust, a lot of my clients moved (to L.A.), so I found a salon in West Hollywood. It broadens my education in beauty; two different cities and styles really push me to think outside the box.”

ON BAY AREA CLIENTELE: “In New York and L.A., they have such a cohesive look — it’s all about a story. If they’re going to do a bun, they are going to make it a ‘look.’ San Francisco has always been very traditional and very classic, but the men have changed. I have men who work at Google who come every three weeks. They are putting (their hair) as a priority.”

ON S.F. TRENDS: “When I first started here in 1990, it was very formal. The more mature clientele are the glamorous ones. That’s what I’m attracting; they’re more daring and not so worried about following a trend. I give them color that helps their skin glow, and they wear less makeup. Women over 40 in S.F. want to look the best they’ve ever looked.”

GO-TO PRODUCTS: Everything by French brand Leonor Greyl. “They are fantastic.”
