Dream days for Maxwell

- By John Shea John Shea is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

Of all of Justin Maxwell’s big moments in Tuesday’s victory that snapped the Dodgers’ winning streak at seven games, he favored his eighth- inning catch of Yasiel Puig’s foul fly — which required sliding into a wall, resulting in a sore left knee — over his first homer and first triple with his new team.

“At the time, that was most important. ( The Dodgers) had runners at first and second,” Maxwell said.

Truth is, every moment is good for Maxwell, 31, who grew up in Maryland and South Carolina a Giants fan because his father, Austin ( a dentist for presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush), was a huge fan of Willie Mays.

Before leaving for spring training, Maxwell was asked by his father to introduce himself to Mays, which the outfielder did — and then immediately called his dad.

“Whenever we watched games on TV, it was the Giants. That was my team,” said Maxwell, who can appreciate the Giants- Dodgers rivalry. “I remember doodling ‘ SF’ in elementary school. So it was definitely a dream come true playing here.”

Maxwell said he noticed in spring training a famous Mays quote on a wall: “It isn't hard to be good from time to time. What's tough is being good every day.” And he is trying to live by it.

Maxwell received another start Wednesday. “Somebody gets hot, they stay in there,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “Right now, he’s hot.” Maxwell went 0- for- 3 and was hit by a pitch during the winning rally in the ninth inning.

Briefly: Ryan Vogelsong was chosen over Yusmeiro Petit to start Thursday’s game in place of Jake Peavy, who’s on the disabled list with a lower back strain. Vogelsong has yielded 12 earned runs in 10 1⁄3 innings over three outings, including one start. Bochy prefers to keep Petit in long relief. ... Travis Ishikawa ( back) had a setback Tuesday, said Bochy, who didn’t set a timetable for his return. Ishikawa played five rehab games with Triple- A Sacramento and joined the Giants for Monday’s ring ceremony.
