Ballet to premiere Peck, Scarlett works

- By Allan Ulrich

The San Francisco Ballet’s 2016 season includes world premieres by Justin Peck and Liam Scarlett, a North American premiere by William Forsythe, a company premiere by Alexei Ratmansky, and the return of Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson’s “Swan Lake,” John Cranko’s “Onegin” and George Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova’s “Coppélia.”

Balanchine’s “Rubies” and “Theme and Variations” will also be revived during the company’s 83rd season, which begins with a gala on Jan. 21 and continues through May 8. In a concession to changing audience tastes, all Tuesday through Thursday subscription performances will begin at 7: 30 p. m. Other starting times are unchanged.

The Forsythe work is “Pas/ Parts,” one of the choreographer’s last pure ballet pieces,

made for the Paris Opéra Ballet in 1999 to a Thom Willems score and with costume design by Forsythe. The Ratmansky piece is “Seven Sonatas,” created for American Ballet Theatre in 2009, to keyboard music by Domenico Scarlatti.

Revivals by Tomasson, Jerome Robbins, Yuri Possokhov, Christopher Wheeldon and Mark Morris will complete the eight- program series. The annual “Nutcracker” production begins Dec. 16 and runs through Dec. 31. For information on subscription packages, call ( 415) 865- 2000 or go to www.sfballet.org.
