A call for more replays

- By John Shea John Shea is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

In the wake of Wednesday’s hullabaloo at third base, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said plays involving contact between runners and coaches ought to be reviewable.

“They’ve said from the beginning that replay is going to get better and better, and it’s a work in progress,” Mattingly said. “Obviously, you have to think that that would be one of the things that would be reviewable.”

After Gregor Blanco ran slightly past third base and made contact with coach Roberto Kelly, Mattingly charged onto the field arguing Blanco should be ruled out for interference. Umpire Fieldin Culbreth, citing Rule 7.09 ( g), said it wasn’t interference because Kelly didn’t physically “assist ( Blanco) in returning to the base.”

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the umpires got it right — moments later, Blanco scored the game- ending run on Joe Panik’s flyball — and said he’ll speak with Kelly about positioning.

“There’s not a third- base coach that doesn’t happen to, trust me. I think it’s a great no- call,” Bochy said. “He didn’t assist him. He had his hands up. He didn’t grab him. Still, it’s a great lesson. It’s going to happen. You just have to remind yourself ( as a coach) not to get too close to the line.”

Mattingly would like to see another play reviewable: catcher’s interference. Tuesday, Yasiel Puig’s bat made contact with Andrew Susac’s glove, and nothing was called.

“Obviously, that’s not reviewable,” Mattingly said. “I’m assuming that over time, these other things will be reviewable. They’re pretty clear cut.” Briefly: The Giants hope to give Pablo Sandoval his ring before the Red Sox- A’s series in Oakland on May 11- 13, either the night before the series at the Red Sox’s hotel or the next morning at China Basin. No fanfare involved. ... The Giants have to get a ring to Michael Morse, perhaps when the Marlins play in San Francisco on May 7- 10. ... Hunter Pence ( broken left arm) graduated from a Wiffle bat to a wood bat and is hitting off a tee. Still no timetable for his return. ... Jake Peavy ( lower back strain) played catch. His rehab process is expected to be slow.
