Frederick T. Rodack

-

After 34,048 days on this earth, Frederick Theodore Rodack decided it was time to move on. Wherever he goes in his next journey, those left behind will marvel at the journey he had here. Born Feb. 1, 1922, to Isabelle O’Leary and Theodore Rodack in Sausalito, Fred explored the Bay Area before the iconic bridge existed. He rode the ferry to St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco. In childhood, he became an avid hunter and gardener and continued to enjoy salmon fishing and growing vegetables throughout life. Fred joined the U.S. Army in 1943. Soon after, his twoyear walking tour of Europe began as part of the 94th Infantry Division. Starting out in Scotland, Fred and his unit made their way through Europe until finishing their journey in Czechoslovakia.

When the War ended, Fred took classes at the Sorbonne in Paris before coming back to the States. There, he met a red-headed Army nurse from Kansas named Donnelle Nesbitt. Their romance began in the City of Lights and continued via letters once they returned to the States. After getting married in Kansas in August 1946, Fred and Donnelle made their home in San Francisco. Married 64 years, Fred cared for Donnelle during her battle with Alzheimer’s.

Fred graduated from the University of San Francisco with an English degree. He taught in Novato for many years and enjoyed decadeslong friendships with fellow faculty and many students. Fred coached high school football and was an avid sport fan throughout life. In retirement, Fred lived in Sonoma County.

Fred is preceded in death by his wife, Donnelle, his son, Don Rodack, and his daughter, Frenelle Plummer. He is survived by grandchildren Chip Mappus (Elena), Ariane Mappus Schrah (Mike) and Robert Plummer; and great-grandchildren Abigail, Amelia, Camille, Catherine, Isabelle and Scott. He also leaves behind many special friends. Fred’s family especially thanks Julie Mendonca for her love, compassion and support.
