Blanton back in majors after promotion to K.C.

The Kansas City Royals selected the contract of former A’s right-hander Joe Blanton from Triple-A Omaha and optioned reliever Aaron Brooks to Omaha before Saturday night’s game against the New York Yankees.

The Royals also recalled left-hander Brian Flynn from Omaha and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a torn muscle in the back of his shoulder. Flynn was barely beaten out for a job in the Royals’ bullpen in spring training.

Blanton, 34, last pitched in the majors with the Angels in 2013. He signed a minorleagu­e deal with Kansas City and made seven starts at Omaha, going 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA.

Reds’ Marshall done: Left-handed reliever Sean Marshall will have more shoulder surgery next week, ending his chances of making a comeback in the final year of his contract with Cincinnati.

The Reds added three years and $16.5 million to Marshall’s contract when they got him from the Cubs before the 2012 season for left-hander Travis Wood and two others.

Briefly: Infielder Dilson Herrera was placed on the 15-day DL by the Mets, who recalled Eric Campbell, who started at third base against Mil- waukee on Saturday, from Triple-A Las Vegas. Herrera broke the tip of his middle finger on his throwing hand while taking pregame grounders Friday. ... Pittsburgh promoted right-hander Wilfredo Boscan from Triple-A Indianapol­is and optioned infielder Steve Lombardozz­i to Indy. The Pirates also transferre­d right-hander Brandon Cumpton to the 60-day DL. ... The Yankees recalled Bryan Mitchell from Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre and optioned fellow right-hander Jose Ramirez to the Triple-A club.
