Shorthande­d Earthquake­s fall to Dynamo

Alex scored in the 77th minute and the host Houston Dynamo outlasted the shorthande­d San Jose Earthquake­s 2-1 on Saturday night.

With San Jose playing down a man after Fatai Alashe picked up his second yellow card, Oscar Garcia led Sheanon Williams in stride down the right wing. Williams’ service to the penalty spot reached Alex, who tapped the ball in for the tiebreaker for Houston (8-8-7).

The Earthquake­s (710-5) had evened the score in the 70th minute. After a foiled corner, Cordell Cato lofted a pass to Shaun Francis in the left side of the box. Francis’ header went over goalkeeper Joe Willis, and Quincy Amarikwa chested the ball into the goal.

Houston’s Da Marcus Beasley started the scoring in the 55th minute. He faked out Victor Bernardez at the top of the penalty area and slipped a leftfooted shot past David Bingham to the near post.

Vancouver 4, Real Salt Lake

0: Cristian Techera scored twice and Octavio Rivero and Pa-Modou Kah added goals for the host Whitecaps (13-8-3), who stretched their Western Conference lead to four points over FC Dallas. Salt Lake dropped to 7-9-8.

Columbus 2, Colorado 1: Kei Kamara scored twice to regain the MLS goals lead as visiting Columbus (9-8-7) handled Colorado (5-8-9).

D.C. United 1, Montreal 0: Chris Rolfe scored early as United (13-7-5) topped the host Impact (8-9-4). Sporting Kansas City 3, Toronto FC 1: Benny Feilhaber scored on a penalty kick and also had an assist for SKC (10-7-4), which topped host Toronto (9-4-9). Philadelph­ia 0, Orlando City 0: Tally Hall made seven saves for his fourth shutout for host Orlando City (7-7-10). ... John McCarthy had his first shutout for Philadelph­ia (6-5-13).
