Doughbies

About the service: Doughbies follows the “I want it now” model that’s being used for dinner options by companies like Sprig and Spoonrocket, but Doughbies is all about dessert. Four types of cookies are offered in sets of either 3, 6 or 12 ($8 for each set of 3), and are brought in under 20 minutes by, at least in our experience, a very jolly driver (it’s a pretty good gig, delivering sweets). The cookies can be given as gifts, and the drivers will read your gift note aloud to the recipient. Pros: I mean, fresh-baked cookies delivered to your door in the time it would take just to preheat your oven. Enough said. Cons: They’re fresh, but they’re not hot, so it still doesn’t beat taking cookies out of the oven, if you’re into that kind of thing. And, they’re pricey. If you let yourself think about the markup, you won’t want to order them. We’re basically talking about flour, butter and sugar at just under $3 a pop. And you have to get a minimum of 3 of each kind — it would be nice to be able to mix and match with a larger variety (only 4 varieties are offered). Also, the delivery window is small — just noon to 4 Monday through Friday. So if you want these for an afterdinner treat, you need to think ahead. What we ate: We stayed pretty basic, with chocolate chip sea salt, peanut butter (with nuts) and oatmeal raisin. We opted out of the snickerdoodle. The cookies were good, not mind-blowing. Would we gift them to friends? Sure. Would we eat them again? If they appeared in front of us, we wouldn’t say no. Were they 100 percent worth the calories? Not totally. But beggers can’t be choosers.
