Man U snags teen for $55.5 million

-

Manchester United took a gamble in making French forward Anthony Martial the priciest teenager in soccer history as Premier League spending in the summer transfer window reached record levels.

England’s top clubs were either inactive or being frustrated on the final day of trading until United announced the signing of Martial, 19, whose move from Monaco is reportedly costing at least $55.5 million.

The deal took total spending by Premier League clubs in this transfer window to about $1.3 billion.

Martial often is compared to France great Thierry Henry because of his pace, power, links with Monaco and liking for cutting in from the left wing, but many outside France will know little about him.

“I know there is pressure,” Martial said, “but I’m ready for it.” Basketball: Luis Scola had 35 points and 13 rebounds, and Argentina beat Canada 94-87 in the men’s Olympic qualifying tournament in Mexico City.

Argentina improved to 2-0 in Group B. Venezuela (1-0) is second, followed by Puerto Rico (0-1), Canada (0-1) and Cuba (0-1). The top two teams in the tournament qualify for Rio 2016. X Games: The X Games are heading to Oslo next year and, for the first time, will include both winter and summer sports. The games will open Feb. 25. Obituary: Tom Scott, a twotime Pro Bowl linebacker for the Eagles, has died. He was 84.
