BEST OF THE DAY

Phillies 14, Mets 8

-

NEW YORK — Fed up with losing to the Mets, Darin Ruf and the Phillies did something about it.

Ruf homered and had a career-high six RBIs, powering a 14-8 win Tuesday as Philadelphia ended its 10-game skid against the NL East leaders.

“It wasn’t pretty, but I’d like to think that we broke the spell,” interim manager Pete Mackanin said.

Ruf, right, caught hold of an 0-2 curveball and launched it for a three-run shot, the second time in six days he capped a five-run third inning with a homer off Jonathon Niese.

Last week in Philadelphia, the Mets rallied from a 5-0 deficit for a 9-5 victory in 13 innings. They made a run at doing it again, scoring four times in the fifth to cut their deficit to 6-4.

“We’ve been made aware of how bad they’ve handed it to us this year,” Ruf said. “It was nice to respond when they came back.”
