Alice Lundin, a resident of Palo Alto for 61 years, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, August 15, 2015, just 5 weeks shy of her 93rd birthday.

Alice was born on September 26, 1922 in San Francisco, CA to Rina and Antone (Tony) Ferrera, one of two daughters born to that immigrant family. Rina came from Turin, Italy and Tony came from the Val Formazza in northern Italy. Alice grew up in San Francisco, on London Street in the Excelsior District, and attended Corpus Christi Elementary School in San Francisco, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Redwood City and St. Paul’s High School in San Francisco and Notre Dame de Namur High School in Belmont and finally Stanford University, where she earned a BA in International Relations in 1951.

Alice met her husband Walter (Walt) at Stanford University, where he was “hashing” at Stanford Village (now the SRI campus in Menlo Park). They were married on December 9, 1951 at St. Ann’s Chapel on Melville Avenue in Palo Alto. They purchased their home on East Charleston Road in Palo Alto and lived there until July 2014, when they moved to Palo Alto Commons. In those 60 years in that home, they raised five children.

When the children grew older, Alice worked at Stanford University as an administrative assistant in the Statistics Department for many years. Alice was a founding member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish (now part of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish) and worked in various ministries and services. She continued through May 2014 as a faithful “money counter” on Monday mornings to tally the weekend collection totals for the parish. She was always very supportive of all the activities of her husband and children. Alice was known as “Noni” to her grandchildren, an Italian family tradition being carried on with Alice’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In retirement, Alice and Walt enjoyed traveling, and found time to visit the Val Formazza in Italy, her ancestral home.

Alice is survived by Walter C. Lundin, her husband of 64 years, her children Chris (Nora), Walt, Mark (Carolyn), Kathy Burns (Terry) and Alison. She was the loving grandmother of Sarah Wilson (David), Stephanie Lundin-Mizel (Melissa), and Kerry Lundin; Alicia Shannon (Jesse) and Tyson Lundin; Jessica Lafferty (Pat Brunn), David Burns (Stefani) and Jennifer Burns, and was the loving great-grandmother of Isla and Bodhi Shannon, Everett Lundin-Mizel, Tyler Wilson and Brian Bockert and James Brunn and Vivian and Dave Burns. Alice was the sister of the late Vivian Jebe (Walter G. Jebe, Sr.) and the aunt of Vivian Jebe (Jerry Morris) and Walter G Jebe, Jr. (Deborah Scharfetter); great–aunt of Shanti Cloonan, Derek (Scott) and Ian Morris, and Nathan and Renee Jebe; great-great-aunt of Heidi, Alek and Tabitha Koehler. Alice also has numerous cousins in Italy.

The Lundin family is grateful to Beatrice Nava and Edith de Rosario for their gentle care of Alice in her last days.

There will be a funeral Mass celebrating Alice’s life on Saturday, September 5 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 3233 Cowper Street, Palo Alto.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Conference of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish or St. Elizabeth Seton School in Palo Alto.
