GM’s wife apologizes for tweets

The wife of Washington general manager Scot McCloughan has apologized for “disparagin­g” and “unfounded” comments on her Twitter account about an ESPN reporter.

Washington’s NFL team issued a statement on behalf of Jessica McCloughan on Wednesday night in which she acknowledg­ed making the remarks, which said the reporter exchanged sexual favors for informatio­n.

The statement by Jessica McCloughan, whose husband was the 49ers’ GM in 2008-09, said in part, “I deeply apologize. ... The comment was unfounded and inappropri­ate, and I have the utmost respect for both the reporter and ESPN.”

The apology does not menformer tion Dianna Russini by name.

Lance Briggs, a seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker who helped the 2006 Chicago Bears reach the Super Bowl, announced he plans to retire.

College football: Ohio State quarterbac­k Cardale Jones was taken to the hospital because of a headache, his mother told the Toledo Blade. Florence Jones told the newspaper her son was taken to an emergency room in Columbus, Ohio, and that he should be fine. Jones is competing with J.T. Barrett to be the top-ranked Buckeyes’ starter.

Courts: Former 49ers running back Lawrence Phillips was charged with murder in the death of his cellmate at a Central California prison. Phillips, 40, is suspected of strangling 37-year-old Damion Soward at Kern Valley State Prison in April.

Phillips is serving a sentence of more than 31 years. He was convicted of choking his girlfriend and later of driving his car into three teens after a pickup football game.

A federal jury convicted the

personal assistant of Gilbert Arenas of stealing more than $2 million from the former Warriors and Wizards guard. The jury found John White, 40, guilty of 11 counts of wire fraud and four counts of filing a false tax-related document.

Basketball: Nick Stauskas and Andrew Wiggins scored 15 points each in limited action and Canada routed Cuba 101-59 for its first victory in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Mexico City.

Stauskas, a guard for the Philadelph­ia 76ers, also had six rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes. Wiggins, the NBA Rookie of the Year for the Minnesota Timberwolv­es, added two blocks for the Canadian team, which fields nine NBA players and is considered a favorite to win one of the two berths to Rio.

Memphis Grizzlies firstround draft pick Jarell Martin has a fractured left foot. The forward from LSU injured his foot while colliding with a player during a workout. Martin will undergo surgery Thursday.
