About a month before the season started, Marin Catholic-Kentfield quarterback Darius Peterson pulled a hamstring. Through the season’s first two games, he was still feeling the effects. Not on Saturday. Feeling 100 percent for the first time, Peterson befuddled the St. Ignatius defense, running and passing visiting Marin Catholic to a 27-7 win in a battle of Wildcats.

Peterson rushed for 101 yards and threw for 218. But it was how he ran and threw.

The 5-foot-11, 180pounder kept play after play alive after the pocket broke down. His best footwork came in the second quarter on a 3rdand-10 play at the Marin Catholic 29.

Peterson first rolled to his left, almost to the sideline. Finding nothing and feeling the pressure, he moved back to the center of the field, avoiding multiple St. Ignatius tacklers.

Finally, he found Jack Hogeboom open deep on the right side hash marks for a 46-yard gain, setting up the game’s first touchdown.

The score remained 7-0 at halftime, but the gap could have been greater. Marin Catholic (2-1) fumbled inside the St. Ignatius 5-yard line on one possession and missed a field-goal attempt on another.

The game stayed close through the third quarter. Sean McKeogh made a 32-yard field goal to make it 10-0 before St. Ignatius (0-2) finally put together a 12-play, 83yard drive late in the period. Nick Clarke scored on a 2-yard run to make it 10-7.

St. Ignatius couldn’t get any consistency on offense, with linebacker Nick Gernhard disrupting plays all over the field. Marin Catholic responded to the St. Ignatius TD with a 10play, 76-yard drive capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Jake Laudenslager.

Another field goal, followed by an interception by Hunter Juarez that led to a Gernhard touchdown run, broke the game open late. No. 5 Serra 35, Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks 29: Leki Nunn completed 12 of 15 passes for 161 yards and one score and rushed for 102 yards and two scores as the host Padres (1-1) responded well from an opening loss to De La Salle-Concord. … In an evenly matched contest, Serra took a 35-17 lead early in the third quarter on a 17-yard run by Nunn. … The Padres were held scoreless the rest of the way, but had enough against the Southern Section power, which held a 424-422 edge in yards. … Kelepi Lataimua rushed 17 times for 103 yards, including a 19yard touchdown run just before the half. … Rory Uniacke had four catches for 93 yards, including a 15-yard TD reception from Nunn on the last play of the first quarter. … Leo Lambert rushed 13 times for 130 yards and a TD for Notre Dame, which also got 188 yards passing and two scores from Cole Klayman. … Notre Dame beat visiting Serra 24-14 last season. Other games: Lincoln senior running back Jacquez Williams-Chish rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t nearly enough as Hillsdale-San Mateo (1-1) rolled to a 58-12 road win over the Mustangs (1-2). After Lincoln closed to 24-12 on a 46-yard TD run by Williams-Chish, Hillsdale answered with two quick TDs before halftime, including a scoring toss from Brett Wetteland to Ben Carrithers, making it 37-12. Nate Rosas tacked on two second-half TD runs and Cameron Taylor one for Hillsdale. … De AnzaRichmond (2-1) recorded its first shutout since its 2005 opener with a 43-0 win at Galileo (0-2).
