Jacksonvil­le State comes close to shocking football world

Auburn dodged an upset that would have ranked with the biggest in college football history, riding Melvin Ray’s touchdown catch in the final minute and Peyton Barber’s overtime scoring run to a 27-20 victory over Jacksonvil­le State on Saturday.

Barber, making his first start at tailback, ran for 125 yards. The most important came on his 4-yard scoring run to cap No. 6 Auburn’s first possession in overtime. Troymaine Pope’s 5-yard touchdown run with 5:38 left gave the Gamecocks a 20-13 lead.

Jacksonvil­le State (1-1) lost its bid to become the first Football Championsh­ip Subdivisio­n team to beat a ranked FBS team since Aug. 31, 2013, when Eastern Washington beat No. 25 Oregon State 49-46. A loss by Auburn (2-0) would have compared with No. 5 Michigan’s loss to Appalachia­n State on Sept. 3, 2007.

#1 Ohio St. 38, Hawaii 0: Ezekiel Elliott scored three touchdowns on short runs for the host Buckeyes (2-0). ... Cardale Jones made his first start at quarterbac­k at Ohio Stadium and passed for 100 yards.

#2 Alabama 37, M. Tennessee 10: Jake Coker passed for 214 yards in the first half and Derrick Henry ran for three touchdowns to lead the host Crimson Tide (2-0).

#3 TCU 70, Stephen F. Austin 7: Trevone Boykin threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns in a little more than a half, and Aaron Green ran for two TDs for the host Horned Frogs (2-0).

#4 Baylor 66, Lamar 31: Corey Coleman had four touchdown catches, and the host Bears (2-0) had 785 total yards. ... Seth Russell completed 23 of 34 passes for 342 yards with the four scores; Coleman had six catches for 182 yards.

#9 Notre Dame 34, Virginia 27: Backup quarterbac­k DeShone Kizer threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Will Fuller with 12 seconds left for the visiting Fighting Irish (2-0). ... Notre Dame won despite quarterbac­k Malik Zaire going down with a broken ankle in the third quarter, before the Cavaliers (0-2) rallied to take the lead. ... Zaire will miss the rest of the season. #10 Georgia 31, Vanderbilt 14: Nick Chubb ran for 189 yards, Isaiah McKenzie returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown, and the visiting Bulldogs (2-0) won in the SEC opener for both teams.

Florida 14: Dalvin Cook ran for 266 yards and three TDs on 30 carries for the host Seminoles (2-0). #12 Clemson 41, Appalachia­n St. 10: Deshaun Watson threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns in the host Tigers’ first game since all-ACC receiver Mike Williams fractured a bone in his neck. ... Watson found his stride and perhaps a new favorite target in Charone Peake, who caught scoring passes of 24 and 59 yards.

#14 LSU 21, #25 Mississipp­i St. 19: Leonard Fournette rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns, and the visiting Tigers (1-0) survived in the SEC opener for both teams when Devon Bell missed a 52-yard fieldgoal attempt for the Bulldogs (1-1) as time ran out.

#15 Georgia Tech 65, Tulane 10: Justin Thomas passed for two touchdowns and ran for another for the host Yellow Jackets (2-0).

#16 Texas A&M 56, Ball State 23: Kyle Allen threw for 126 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the host Aggies (2-0) rolled.

#17 Mississipp­i 73, Fresno St. 21: Chad Kelly threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns and Quincy Adeboyejo caught three touchdown passes for the host Rebels (2-0). ... Chason Virgil was 12 of 18 passing for 140 yards, two touchdowns and two intercepti­ons for the Bulldogs (1-1), and Marteze Waller ran for 91 yards.

Toledo 16, #18 Arkansas 12: Former Alabama reserve quarterbac­k Phillip Ely threw for 237 yards, and the Rockets’ defense rattled the host Razorbacks into a number of mistakes. #19 Oklahoma 31, #23 Tennessee 24: Baker Mayfield threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard

in double overtime and the visiting Sooners (2-0) overcame a 17-point deficit. The Volunteers (1-1) have lost 28 of their past 29 games against Top 25 teams.

BYU 35, #20 Boise State 24: Tanner Mangums threw a go-ahead 35-yard TD pass to Mitchell Juergens with 45 seconds left and Kai Nacua returned an intercepti­on for a touchdown 15 seconds later as the host Cougars (2-0) beat the Broncos (1-1).

#21 Missouri 27, Arkansas St. 20: Maty Mauk threw for three touchdowns as the Tigers (2-0) extended their road winning streak to 11 games by rallying in the second half.

No. 8 USC 59, Idaho 9: Cody Kessler threw for a career-high 410 yards and hit JuJu Smith-Schuster with two of his three TD passes for the host Trojans (2-0). ... Smith-Schuster set career highs with 10 catches for 192 yards as the Trojans piled up 738 total yards.

#22 Arizona 44, Nevada 20: Nick Wilson ran for 194 yards and three touchdowns and Anu Solomon passed for 264 yards and two more scores for the visiting Wildcats (2-0). ... Don Jackson rushed for 91 yards for the Wolf Pack (1-1).

Washington State 37, Rutgers 34: Luke Falk led a 10-play, 90-yard touchdown drive, finding River Cracraft with an 8-yard strike with :13 left to lift the visiting Cougars. ... Falk threw for 468 yards and four touchdowns. ... The Scarlet Knights’ Janarion Grant returned a kickoff and a punt for TDs and had a school-record 339 total yards.

Washington 49, Sacramento St. 0: Myles Gaskin rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns for the host Huskies (1-1), and Jake Browning passed for 326 yards and two touchdowns.

Colorado 48, UMass 14: Michael Adkins and Christian Powell became the first Colorado tailbacks to eclipse 100 yards rushing in the same game in five years, helping the host Buffaloes (1-1) snap a nine-game skid. ... Adkins rushed for 119 yards and a TD, and Powell had 105 and two scores.

JUNIOR COLLEGE

#2 CCSF 28, Laney 0: Elijah Dale rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries and Anthony Gordon passed for 175 yards for the host Rams (2-0). Laney fell to 1-1.

HISTORY

Female kicker: April Goss kicked an extra point in the first half in Kent State’s 45-13 win over Delaware State, becoming the second woman to score in a major college football game.
