Douglas Clendenin Horner

Douglas Clendenin Horner, of Brentwood, California, died peacefully in Concord on Saturday August 15, 2015, at the age of 89 after a brief illness. “Doug” was born on May 26, 1926 in San Francisco to Warren Douglas Horner and Madge Clendenin Horner. Doug grew up in San Francisco, attending the Grant School and Lowell High School. He was a graduate of Stanford University earning a BA in Economics.

Doug was a member of the Mounted Patrol of Boy Scout Troop 14, and proudly rode his horse across the Golden Gate Bridge, as a Cub Scout, on opening day, May 27, 1937 at the age of 11. After graduating from Lowell High School, Doug enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Alameda until the end of WWII, earning the rank of Lieutenant.

Doug began his career in sales with Crown, Cork & Seal. In the early 1960’s, he transition­ed, becoming a stockbroke­r with the firm of Schuman, Agnew & Co in San Francisco. He rose to the title of Sales Manager and Partner until the firm was sold to Morgan Stanley in 1978. Doug continued his career working for Eureka Chemical and Pacific Leasing until his retirement.

Doug was a member of the Bohemian Club for 54 years, a member of the San Francisco Yacht Club, and a former member and board member of the Olympic Club and the Delta Yacht Club. Doug was involved in a Bohemian Club travel group of Castles and Concerts, visiting Argentina, Ireland, Italy and the Czech Republic.

Doug lived life to the fullest. He was married to Jean Smith Horner of Brentwood, CA and the two traveled the World visiting many exotic locations. Together, they shared a life long passion for boats. Most recently, they enjoyed cruising throughout San Francisco Bay and the Delta in their 42’ Carver, fittingly named “Fuelin’ Around”. Doug was a lifelong fan and season ticket holder of Stanford Football.

Doug is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jean Smith Horner of Brentwood, CA, three children, Blair Horner Conrad of San Carlos, CA, Kendall Horner Hansen of Carmichael, CA, and Douglas Horner, Jr. of San Francisco and 7 grandchild­ren. Doug is preceded in death by a son Warren Douglas Horner, II, and a sister Persis “Perky” Horner Hyde of Watsonvill­e. Services are private. In his memory, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
