Enwere’s homecoming is sweet and successful
AUSTIN, Texas — Vic Enwere enjoyed a memorable homecoming in Cal’s 45-44 win Saturday at Texas.
In front of family and friends, the sophomore running back from Missouri City, Texas, rushed for a career-high 73 yards and two touchdowns. It came on a day in which Enwere made his first career start in place of senior Daniel Lasco, who was out with a strained muscle in his hip.
“It was a very fun homecoming,” Enwere said.
Enwere, who arrived at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with 52 rushing yards through two games, provided the Bears with a physical option in short-yardage situations. Seven of his 16 carries were for first downs or touchdowns. Homecoming, too: For head coach Sonny Dykes, Saturday’s win held unique personal significance.
His team, after all, beat a Texas program that gave his father, longtime Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes, his start in college coaching nearly 60 years ago. Sonny, who spent much of his coaching career in the Lone Star State before taking over at Cal in 2012, is the only one of Spike’s three children not living in Texas.
“It means a lot,” Sonny Dykes said. “I may get a little emotional on the bus ride home. … But we didn’t talk about that with our players. We just talked about a chance to win the game.” More records: The chaotic end to Saturday’s game perhaps overshadowed the three program records quarterback Jared Goff set. The third-year starter now now has the most career passing yards (8,126), most total offense (8,266) and most career completions (704) in Cal history.
Just three games into his junior season, Goff has at least 22 school records. On the year, he is 68-of-93 for 898 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.
“I thought he played well,” Dykes said of Goff. “He just figures out ways to make plays. He did what he always does.”
