RB Hyde takes hit in stride, will play

In his second career start Sunday, 49ers running back Carlos Hyde suffered a quadriceps injury and exited to undergo a concussion test, which came back negative.

Hyde, 25, is fine to play Sunday at Arizona — he’s listed as probable — but the 235-pounder’s punishing running style could invite injuries.

Hyde, however, has little interest in adding finesse to his game.

“That’s just the way I play,” he said. “Instead of me getting hit, I like to deliver the hit. I watch film, and some of those hits I don’t need to take. It’s the nature of the game, though.”

Hyde said he took no issue with the low shot he took from Pittsburgh safety Mike Mitchell that caused his quadriceps injury. It initially appeared Hyde took a hit to the knee.

“He was just trying to hit me low,” Hyde said. “Not too many guys will try to hit me high.” Injury report: Running back Reggie Bush (calf ) is listed as doubtful for Sunday after he failed to practice during the week. Bush worked on a side field at the start of practice and appeared to be running fine at halfspeed.

Head coach Jim Tomsula said he didn’t want Bush to play if he wasn’t close to fully recovered.

“What I don’t want to do there — is we could probably do one of those 80-percenter things, and I’m not interested in 80 percent,” Tomsula said. “To me, 80 percent starts to linger.”

Tight end Vance McDonald (knee) and wide receiver Bruce Ellington (ankle) are both questionable. They were limited in practice this week.

With Bush and Ellington sidelined at Pittsburgh, running back Mike Davis and wide receiver DeAndrew White made their NFL debuts. Hello, old friend: On Sunday, the 49ers could face a former teammate: Arizona left guard Mike Iupati, who signed a five-year, $40 million deal in March after spending his first five seasons with San Francisco.

Iupati is questionable after he had surgery on his left knee a few days after he injured his meniscus Aug. 18. He has been limited in practice the past two weeks and Arizona head coach Bruce Arians indicated Iupati would play if he doesn’t experience any knee swelling.

Inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman and Iupati were members of the 2010 draft class. Bowman said they also shared some practice collisions.

“Yeah, we practiced so many years together,” Bowman said. “We came in together. Mike’s a great player. I’m excited to see him back out there.”

The Cardinals (2-0) have managed just fine with Ted Larsen, 28, subbing for Iupati. Arizona hasn’t allowed a sack and is averaging 4.4 yards per rushing attempt.

Tomsula talk: After a workout, Tomsula arrived for his midmorning news conference sweating so much that he brought a towel to the podium.

After he apologized for his appearance, a reporter told him he looked good.

Responded Tomsula: “I haven’t look good since I was in third grade.”
