Skyscraper fire in Chicago
A fire broke out Saturday afternoon in an upper floor of the John Hancock Center, briefly trapping office workers in the skyscraper, one of Chicago’s tallest. Within an hour of the report, officials announced that the blaze had been brought under control. Five people were injured — two were in good condition, and three were stable. The 100-story tower includes offices, residential units and a rooftop observation deck that is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city. The tower stands on Michigan Avenue, one of the busiest, and the fire drew scores of spectators, many standing behind barricades that had been put up along the sidewalk for the annual lights festival parade. Flames and smoke billowed out of the upper floors as snow fell.
