-

Betty Hamilton Shurtleff passed away peacefully at her home in San Francisco on November 18, 2015.

A third generation San Franciscan, Betty was the daughter of Noble Hamilton and Elizabeth Bull Hamilton and great granddaughter of pioneers Alpheus Bull I and the Reverend Laurentine Hamilton for whom Mt. Hamilton is named.

Betty attended Grant Grammar School and the Hamlin School in San Francisco, spending her summers in Bolinas. The times she spent in Bolinas, remained an important memory throughout her life.

As an undergraduate, Betty studied at the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After graduating in 1940, she worked as a medical technologist in San Francisco until her marriage to Eugene A. Shurtleff in Rome in 1962. Following her marriage to Gene, she came to love summers spent at their cabin on Echo Lake as well as time spent at their house in Carmel.

Betty served on the Board of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for many years, was a longtime member of the San Francisco Symphony League and was on the Travel Committee of the California Academy of Science.

Betty is survived by her step-daughters Kathleen Armitage of Colorado, Christine Cashman of Nova Scotia, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no services. Contributions of her memory can be made to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the California Academy of Sciences, to Hospice by the Bay or to a charity of your choice.
