San Luis Obispo: cycle the city

-

With an Amtrak station downtown, San Luis Obispo is an ideal escape with no need to rent a car. Go green and pedal your way around town or throughout the county, tackle some trails or coast through nearby wine country on a self-guided bicycle tour. With rentals and complimentary bikes at some hotels, it’s an easy way to enjoy some exercise.

Get there: Take Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner or Coast Starlight route from the Oakland station at Jack London Square. Total round-trip fare on both routes starts at about $78. Doze: A boutique hotel in downtown San Luis Obispo, Granada Hotel & Bistro has complimentary 7-speed Linus Bikes available for guests. 1130 Morro St.; (805) 5449100; www.granadahotelandbistro.com. Rates start at $199. Dine: Every bike excursion deserves tasty sustenance, and you can

get that easily (brunch, lunch and dinner) at Sidecar. 1127 Broad St.; (805) 540-5340; www. sidecarslo.com. Do: Get a rental bike at Wally’s Bike World, and pedal along wellmarked bike paths that not only cover downtown, but also extend north to Morro Bay and other outlying areas. Good to know: If you’re a master planner, get your road and mountain bike maps in advance from www.visitslo.com and put your favorite trails on your itinerary.
