Texas hires Gilbert to call offense’s plays

Texas coach Charlie Strong formally announced the addition of offensive coordinato­r Sterlin Gilbert from Tulsa and other staff changes Saturday as he tries to remake his offense after a 5-7 season.

Gilbert will call plays and coach quarterbac­ks and gets a three-year contract worth $850,000 per year. Cal offensive coordinato­r Tony Franklin had been thought to be a candidate for the job.

Texas also hired Tulsa’s Matt Mattox as offensive line coach and rungame coordinato­r. He gets a three-year contract worth $550,000 per year. Strong announced that former offensive coordinato­r Shawn Watson and offensive line coach Joe Wickline were dismissed. Georgia hires: New Georgia coach Kirby Smart hired Pittsburgh assistant Jim Chaney as offensive coordinato­r, Sam Pittman from Arkansas as offensive line coach and Alabama’s Glen Schumann as a defensive assistant. FCS quarterfin­als: Jeremiah Briscoe threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns to lead host Sam Houston State to a 48-21 win over Colgate. Sam Houston (11-3) faces top-seeded Jacksonvil­le State in the semifinals. ... Bruce Anderson returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second straight week to help host North Dakota State to a 23-13 victory over Northern Iowa.

Division II semifinals: Backup Connor Jessop threw two touchdown passes and Shepherd survived two last-minute two-point conversion attempts to hold off Grand Valley State 34-32 in Shepherdst­own, W.Va. The Rams (13-0) will make their first D-II title appearance next Saturday against Northwest Missouri State (14-0).

NWMS advanced in Maryville, Mo., as Brady Bolles threw two TD passes, including a 64yarder with 4:29 left, to beat West Georgia 38-23.

Division III semifinals: Jordan Roberts ran for 256 yards and three touchdowns as host No. 4 St. Thomas (Minn.) beat second-ranked Linfield (Ore.) 38-17 to advance to the final.

Jack Kaiser added two first-quarter touchdown runs and the Tommies (14-0) ran for 389 yards. St. Thomas will face top-ranked Mount Union in Friday’s Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl in Salem, Va.

Mount Union (14-0), which beat Wisconsin-Whitewater 36-6 on Saturday, beat the Tommies in the 2012 final.
