Philip Thomas Cleary

Passed away in Reno Nevada on December 9th, 2015 at the age of 70 after a brief illness. He was born and raised in San Francisco to Carl and Rose (Rebizzo) Cleary. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years Katherine (Sushkoff) Cleary, his daughters Susan (Spencer) Hartman and Alexandra Cleary, his beloved grandsons Alexander and Dominic Hartman, and his sister Janice (Cleary) Shelstraet­e. He also leaves behind sister in-law Marina (Michael) Hardeman and brother in-law Valentin Sushkoff as well as many nieces and nephews, relatives, friends and loved ones.

He graduated from Poly High School in San Francisco in 1962. He served in the Army Reserve and was a member of Local 101 U.F.C.W. He served on many committees in Millbrae, San Mateo, and Reno and remained an avid 49er fan even after moving to Reno. His quick wit livened up any occasion! He was a proud Millbrae Lion’s member and participat­ed in many charitable cooking events. He loved volunteeri­ng for the Elks Lodge in San Mateo and Reno. He was a Special Blood Donor for both Peninsula Blood bank in Burlingame and The United Blood Services in Reno having received many commendati­ons for his blood donations.

Phil and Kathy were owners of The Italian Deli in Millbrae for many years and he was on the Millbrae Merchants Associatio­n Board. After that they opened a second business in Burlingame, Avanti’s always helping the Millbrae and Burlingame Police Department­s in their charitable events. Being in the kitchen was a passion of his. He loved helping the Millbrae Lions Club with their huge Crab Feeds.

Everyone that knew him remembers his sign at his last business called Phil’s Way and that is how he lived his life!

Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral 10:00am, Wed. Dec. 15th, 2015 at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary 500 Westlake Ave. Daly City, CA. Committal Italian Cemetery.
