San Martin: Silicon Valley hideaway
A half-hour south of San Jose — and a world away from Silicon Valley’s stress — SAP cofounder Hasso Plattner owns a luxurious resort hidden in a 1,700-acre preserve of hills and valleys. Originally designed as a corporate retreat and private golf club, Rosewood CordeValle also makes a serene oasis for couples.
Get there: From San Francisco, it’s about 72 miles via Highway 101 south to San Martin, then 3 miles west.
Doze: Rosewood CordeValle’s 45 residentialsize fairway rooms, bungalows and villas boast gas fireplaces, jetted tubs and private patios. Weekday rates start at $375, weekends from $495, with romance packages including a $100 spa credit and breakfast from $465 (www.rose woodhotels.com/en/ cordevalle-northerncalifornia).
Dine: Stay relaxed by dining at the three in-house restaurants, which like the spa and golf course are open only to hotel guests and club members. One Iron Bar serves all three meals, with freerange Jidori chicken and house-smoked meats on the contemporary Californian menu.
Do: Besides an indulgent treatment at Sense Spa (recommended), you can hit the championship golf course; swim, play tennis, take yoga and fitness classes; and hike on trails past the vineyards of Clos La Chance Winery, itself open for tastings and tours. Visit a local farm or the Frantoio Olive Grove on a two-hour picnic tour for $125.
Good to know: The $25 nightly resort fee includes tips for the frequently used valet/ shuttle service. Plattner loves dogs, so pets are welcomed with various amenities for $100 per stay.
