Donaldson deal official

American League MVP Josh Donaldson and the Toronto Blue Jays have completed their agreement on a $ 28.65 million, two- year contract.

Donaldson receives $ 11.65 million this year and $ 17 million in 2017 under the deal announced Wednesday.

Toronto and the former A’s standout had been scheduled for a salary arbitratio­n hearing next week. The 30- year- old third baseman had asked for a raise from $ 4.3 million to $ 11.8 million and Toronto had offered $ 11.35 million when the sides exchanged proposed arbitratio­n salaries last month.

Acquired from Oakland in November 2014, Donaldson made the AL All- Star team for the second straight season in 2015. He led the majors with 122 runs, topped the AL with 123 RBIs and hit .297 with 41 home runs to help the Blue Jays reach the playoffs for the first time since winning consecutiv­e World Series in 1992 and ’ 93.

He is eligible for free agency after the 2018 World Series. Briefly: J. D. Martinez and Detroit finalized their $ 18.5 million, two- year contract. Martinez will earn $ 6.75 million this year and $ 11.75 million in 2017. Martinez, 28, batted .282 with 38 home runs and 102 RBIs last season. He hit 23 homers in 2014 after he was released by Houston during spring training and the Tigers signed him. ... First baseman Mitch Moreland agreed to a $ 5.7 million, oneyear contract with Texas. Moreland gets a raise without an arbitratio­n hearing for the third year in a row. He will be eligible for free agency after this year’s World Series. Moreland made $ 2,975,000 last season, when he hit .278 with 23 home runs and 85 RBIs in 132 games, starting 110 of those at first base. ... Houston designated hitter Evan Gattis underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia and will be out four to six weeks.
