Utah ends skid, tops Washington

-

Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak addressed the play of Lorenzo Bonam and others during a team meeting this week. The Utes were coming off consecutive losses and Bonam was benched in a loss to Oregon on Sunday.

The talk must have struck a chord.

Bonam scored 18 points as host Utah ( 18- 7, 7- 5) defeated Washington 90- 82Wednesday night to keep itself on the fringe of the Pac- 12 conference race.

“I told our guys after the Oregon game, as much as I’d love to have sit- down touchy- feely meetings and all that kind of stuff, this isn’t the time to do it,” Krystkowiak said. “It’s no secret; you’re telling guys things they already know. We aren’t going to be very successful if we don’t get ( Bonam) and a number of other guys to change some of the mistakes.

“Got to start bringing it. ... It’s not a real sensitive time. ... The cards are on the table. If we want to accomplish some goals, we’re going to have to tighten it up.”

Bonam bounced back in a big way after being held scoreless and getting benched in the 76- 66 loss to Oregon. He shot 7- for- 9 from the field Wednesday and powered a 16- 4 run that pushed the Utes ahead for good. Bonam hit a three- pointer with 8: 34 remaining to give Utah a six- point lead, its largest at the time. His steal and layup pushed the lead to 77- 65.

Jakob Poeltl finished with 23 points for the Utes.

Marquese Chriss scored 24 for the Huskies ( 15- 9, 7- 5), and Andrew Andrews chipped in 22.
