A man down, Quakes lose

Gyasi Zardes scored two goals early in the second half, and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the 10-man San Jose Earthquake­s 3-1 in the 2016 opener of the California Clasico rivalry in Carson (Los Angeles County) on Saturday night.

Jelle Van Damme headed the ball across the front of the goal and Zardes finished with a toe punch in the 56th minute. Zardes doubled the lead six minutes later with an opportunis­tic stab at Kip Colvey’s errant clearance attempt.

Robbie Keane capped the scoring with a penalty kick for the Galaxy (2-1-0) in the 91st minute.

The Earthquake­s (2- 1-0) went down a man in the third minute of firsthalf stoppage time when Simon Dawkins was sent off for a lunging scissor tackle on Sebastian Lletget.

Chris Wondolowsk­i scored in the 89th minute to pull the Quakes within 2-1.

Europe: The lethal striking duo of Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy combined again to nudge Leicester closer to the title, although Arsenal remains primed to pounce on any slip-ups by the leaders after ending a three-game winless run in the English Premier League. Vardy, the league’s top scorer, set up Mahrez for his 16th goal of the season at Crystal Palace to clinch Leicester’s third successive 1-0 win. With seven games remaining, Leicester is eight points clear of Tottenham, which hosts Bournemout­h on Sunday, and Arsenal is a further three points back in third after a 2-0 win at Everton.

U.S. national team: Stanford forward Jordan Morris was picked for the U.S. under-23 roster for an Olympic qualifying playoff at Colombia on Friday and will miss the Americans’ World Cup qualifier at Guatemala that night.
