Chris Turkovich’s 100-point selections for Yolo County experiences: Sophia’s Thai Kitchen: Opened in 1995, this was the first Thai restaurant in Davis. It brings Southeast Asian flair to fresh California ingredients. “It has great food and cocktails, as well as the best Thai iced tea. I always order one of their curry dishes.” 129 E St., Suite E, Davis; (530) 758-4333. www.sophiasthaikitchen.com Berryessa Brewing Co.: This place has it all — a 20-barrel craft brewery with a tap room, indoor and outdoor seating, and regular events featuring live music and food trucks. “It has the best beer, and the best beer name: Common Sense” (which boasts a deep straw color, soft malty body and a thick white head with a subtle floral aroma). 27260 Highway 128, Winters; (530) 795-3526. www.berryessabrewingco.com Sacramento River: An outdoors enthusiast who runs, skis, cycles and does triathlons, Turkovich heads here as often as he can in the summer for water-skiing, and in the winter for “some of the best fishing in the state.” www.sacramentoriver.org/index.php/access_site.php Kitchen 428 Restaurant and Mojo’s Lounge: Turkovich enjoys the lively atmosphere at this downtown Woodland restaurant housed in the historic Jackson Building, which was built in 1891. “It has a constantly evolving menu. It’s a true farm-to-fork (and glass) restaurant that always has something new to try.” 428 First St., Woodland; (530) 661-0428. www.mojoskitchen428.com Festival de Comunidad/Carnitas Festival: Carnivores should head to Rotary Park on the last Saturday in September for this annual event, now in its eighth year. There’s music and dancing, and of course the main attraction — a carnitas cook-off. Platefuls are offered for a fee at this mighty meat fest. 201 Railroad Ave., Winters. http://bit.ly/1nwXD7c Biking from Winters to Davis: Turkovich and his wife jump on their bicycles to do this ride regularly, which is about 12 miles one way. “It takes about an hour, and it is an easy ride through the beautiful countryside past farms. There is good food and coffee along the way, especially at Steady Eddy’s Coffee House in Winters.” 5 E. Main St., Suite A, Winters; (530) 795-3588. www.steady-eddys.com. Lake Solano County Park: At the base of coastal foothills west of downtown Winters, this picturesque spot is a popular place for kayakers like Turkovich. “It’s super quiet, and there’s lots of wildlife. It’s not uncommon to see the resident bald eagle.” 8685 Pleasants Valley Road, Winters.
