Ducks win to keep hold of 2nd place
Jakob Silfverberg scored with 58.6 left in overtime to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 3- 2 win at Winnipeg on Sunday.
Silfverberg got the puck all alone in the offensive zone and had plenty of time to take aim at goalie Michael Hutchinson. Silfverberg’s first try on a backhand was stopped but the wing followed it by burying the rebound.
“It wasn’t the prettiest way ( to score), but we got the win anyway,” Silfverberg said.
“It was one of those games — it was ugly. It was an ugly hockey game,” captain Ryan Getzlaf said. “The puck was bouncing around, not really connecting a whole lot for both teams. We got away with the win.”
The Ducks ( 40- 22- 9) have won two straight for the first time since winning a franchiserecord 11 in a row, and remained one point ahead of the Sharks for second place in the Pacific Division.
Anaheim lost left wing David Perron for the balance of the game and potentially beyond when he lost an edge in attempting to check Mark Scheifele and crashed into the boards with his right shoulder.
Avalanche 3, Oilers 2: Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and an assist as visiting Colorado won its third in a row to remain one point ahead of Minnesota for the final wild- card spot in the Western Conference. Edmonton was eliminated from playoff contention for the 10th consecutive year.
Wild 3, Blackhawks 2: Charlie Coyle scored the only goal in the shootout as visiting Minnesota improved to 4- 0 against Chicago. The Blackhawks, by earning a point, moved to two points behind second- place St. Louis in the Central Division.
Penguins 6, Capitals 2: Rookie Tom Kuhnhackl had a goal as host Pittsburgh prevented Washington from clinching the Metropolitan Division title. Sidney Crosby picked up two assists to push his scoring streak to 12 games as the Penguins won their sixth straight to tie the Rangers for second in the Metropolitan.
Devils 2, Blue Jackets 1: Devante Smith- Pelly scored the tie- breaking goal 8: 38 into the third period and Scott Wedgewood made 27 saves in his NHL debut to lead host New Jersey.
Flames 4, Canadiens 1: Sean Monahan had two goals and an assist for visiting Calgary. Niklas Backstrom, in his first NHL game in 14 months, stopped 21 shots for the victory.
Neuvirth out: Philadelphia goaltender Michal Neuvirth is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an unspecified lower- body injury.
