Cunningham, 18, makes worlds 1st

-

High school senior Vashti Cunningham, daughter of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham, became the youngest high- jump champion ever at the world track and field championships in Portland.

The gold- medal- winning clearance of 6 feet, 5 inches is the latest feat in the stunning rise of the 18- year- old, who set the American high school record in the event at the U. S. indoor championship the previous weekend.

Randall Cunningham, who is also his daughter’s coach, leaped to his feet when she was pronounced the winner.

The United States finished the event with a record 23 medals, including 13 golds. Soccer: Manchester City’s 1- 0 loss to Manchester United, courtesy of another goal by Manchester- born teenager Marcus Rashford, left the club under severe threat of being displaced in the top four in the English Premier League and missing Champions League qualification.

After winning the Manchester derby, United — as well as West Ham — is only one point behind fourth- place City.

Also, Harry Kane scored two goals as Tottenham beat Bournemouth 3- 0 to stay five points behind leader Leicester.

In Italy, Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon set a Serie A record for not conceding a goal in a 4- 1 win at Torino. Buffon shattered the 22- year- old record held by Sebastiano Rossi, who kept a clean sheet for 929 consecutive minutes for AC Milan from Dec. 12, 1993, to Feb. 27, 1994. Buffon stretched his run to 974 minutes before he was finally beaten — by a penalty kick.
