Free S.F. concert inspired by Jenny Lind

- — Joshua Kosman

It was in 1850 that soprano Jenny Lind, known as “the Swedish Nightingale,” made an extensive tour of the United States at the behest of the great theatrical impresario P.T. Barnum. That tour inspired an enthusiasm for Swedish musical artistry that continues to this day.

A case in point is the Jenny Lind Concert, presented each year free of charge in Yerba Buena Gardens as a showcase for up-and-coming vocalists from Scandinavia who are following in the footsteps of the concert’s namesake.

This year’s artist is mezzo-soprano Karin Osbeck, a student at Stockholm’s University College of Opera, who will sing a program of classic operatic arias accompanied by pianist Matilda Lindholm.

Jenny Lind Concert: 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23. Free. Yerba Buena Gardens, 760 Howard St., S.F. (415) 543-1718. http://ybgfestival.org.
