Celebrate Juneteenth through dance

- — Pam Grady

“Fallen Heroes, Rising Stars: A Juneteenth Celebration Through Dance,” a Grown Women’s Dance Collective annual event, blends dance, music and American history, while honoring the legacies of African American artists like Maya Angelou, James Brown, Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole and Michael Jackson.

The collective is made up of performers in their 40s and 50s, including former soloists with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Martha Graham Company, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company and others. They pay homage to the late entertainment legends with pieces set to their influential work. The performances also commemorate the end of slavery in the U.S.

Patrons can also purchase tickets for low-income children. The child will receive admission to the event, a dance class, a stage tour, a photo op with the dancers and a black history biography.

Fallen Heroes, Rising Stars: A Juneteenth Celebration Through Dance: 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, June 25. $25-$120. Impact Hub, 2323 Broadway, Oakland. (800) 838-3006. http://grownwomendance.vpweb.com
