1 Guns seized: Authoritie­s seized a dozen rifles and six handguns from the home of a suburban Detroit man who allegedly mentioned during a mental health group discussion that he wanted to kill police officers. Warren Police Commission­er Jere Green said Saturday that someone called police and told them the man said he “wanted to do something big like in Dallas.” The house in Center Line was searched Friday, and Green said the man was committed to a psychiatri­c center. He has not been charged. In the Dallas attack, a gunman opened fire on officers, killing five and wounding nine others and two civilians before police killed him.

2 Boy dies in desert: A 12-year-old boy died after he was out hiking in north Phoenix amid triple-digit temperatur­es. The boy was hiking with a man Friday afternoon in the Sonoran Desert Preserve when he became ill, police said. Firefighte­rs responded, and he was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The boy, who was not identified, was later pronounced dead. Phoenix reached 100 degrees by 10 a.m. Friday and hit a high of 112 just after 5:30 p.m.

3 Ferry crash: Seventeen passengers suffered mostly minor injuries Saturday when a ferry struck a dock in New Jersey across from Manhattan. Jersey City spokeswoma­n Jennifer Morrill said the NY Waterway ferry made a hard landing and hit a pier around 7:30 p.m. Injured passengers were taken to local hospitals. Morrill said most injuries appeared minor, but three people were removed on stretchers. Coast Guard Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier said about 40 people were aboard the ferry when the collision happened. The cause of the crash is under investigat­ion.

4 Monument closed: The Washington Monument in the nation’s capital will be closed until at least Tuesday because of problems with the elevator. The National Park Service said a mechanical failure occurred Saturday morning before the monument opened. No visitors were in the monument at the time.

5 Missing student: Authoritie­s believe they have found the remains of a missing Ohio college student whose bicycle was discovered in a cornfield last week. Fulton County Sheriff Roy Miller said Saturday that investigat­ors found the remains Friday evening. An autopsy has yet to be completed. Authoritie­s did not release details on how she might have died. University of Toledo student Sierah Joughin, 20, was last seen riding her bike Tuesday near Metamora. Authoritie­s on Friday arrested James Worley, 57, of Delta, on an abduction charge related to her disappeara­nce.

6 Deadly lightning: A 14-year-old girl died and her stepmother was injured when lightning struck the personal watercraft they were riding on a Utah reservoir, authoritie­s said. Brooklyn Reynolds and her stepmother, Jayleen Reynolds, were riding in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir when their watercraft was hit Friday. The reservoir is about 200 miles east of Salt Lake City.
