Donald “Don” James Prunty

-

Donald “Don” James Prunty, 73, died on July 16, 2016 at his home in San Francisco. Born to James and Lyle Prunty on June 24, 1943, he was proud to be a third generation San Franciscan. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco, where he was an all-city swimmer. He served in the US Army Reserve and received an honorable discharge in 1969. Don was a plumber for UA Local 38 for 40 years, retiring in 2003, and following his retirement served as a teacher for the UA Local 38 Apprenticeship program for 12 years. During Don’s retirement his favorite past-times were reading all types of books and the daily Chronicle as well as his weekly Pedro card games at the Eagles Club in Brisbane. An avid gardener, Don spent many hours protecting his hard work from raccoons, though they eventually won the battle of the mint.

Don’s two great loves, after his family, were sports and travel. A longtime 49ers fan, he was a season ticket holder dating back to the Kezar and Candlestick years, and he remained loyal through good years and not so good years. He enjoyed Giants Spring Training and especially the “Even Years,” and was a fan of the Warriors and the “Splash Brothers.” Don was always eager to pack his bags and explore new places. He and Rosemary traveled extensively throughout the US, finding particular fascination with the state parks, including Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Niagara Falls. They were also world travelers, to destinations in Southeast Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Central and South America. Whether on a cruise or on land, they made great memories and lasting friendships.

Don is survived by his wife Rosemary, children Michael Prunty, Jeffery Prunty and his wife Shawna, Michele Olson and her husband Eric, and Meghan Barrett and her husband Tyler, and his brother Gary Prunty and sister-in-law Susie. He is also survived by 5 beloved grandchildren, Sarah, Jackson, Jake, Tanner, and Brenna, as well as numerous nieces and nephews (and grandnieces and nephews).

Services will be held on July 28, 2016 at 11:00am at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, at 1490 19th St., San Francisco, CA 94107, with a reception to follow at Val’s Restaurant in Daly City.

Don will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
