Paul passed away peacefully at home in Rancho Mirage, California on July 11, 2016. He was born May 21, 1930 in New Haven where his father was a renowned surgeon of trauma at Harvard and Yale and mother elected seven times to the Connecticu­t State Legislatur­e. Paul trained for diplomatic service, graduating in Russian from Middlebury College and the University of Colorado, After college graduation, he spent one year at Army Language School in Monterey, California and served for an additional two years in Frankfurt, Germany as army liaison to the State Department in Washington.

After returning to California in 1957, Paul establishe­d a successful insurance brokerage firm and was active in charitable, political and civic affairs in San Francisco. He was a member of the Bohemian Club for over 40 years and a member for 57 years in America’s oldest athletic club - the Olympic Club - maintainin­g membership in both until he died.

He was predecease­d by his adored daughter Hilary Vestal. He is survived by his loving son Peter, wife Judith and two granddaugh­ters, Katherine and Madeleine Vestal, all of San Francisco.

Paul is also survived by Hollis Hardin, his best friend and partner since 1990, sharing their lives and homes together in San Francisco, Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.

Private family services will be held.
