RITZ-CARLTON PHILADELPHIA
While the Democratic National Convention will soon bring big bucks to Philadelphia, the city’s Ritz-Carlton is banking on longer-term gains from its recent $25 million renovation. Built in 1908 as a reproduction of the Pantheon, the bank-turnedhotel on Penn Square now hosts celebrity chef Richard Sandoval’s Aqimero in its spectacularly domed lobby, while the design of posh guestrooms in the adjacent modern tower was inspired by the neutral colors and texture of money — pops of bronze, nickel, copper and emerald green.
Setting: Virtually in the center of Center City, perfect for any platform that includes supporting local businesses like shops, pubs and restaurants and the arts — the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where Rocky Balboa famously flexed his running muscles, is within an easy jog. Establish patriotic credentials with a 15-minute walk east to Independence Hall, or cast a vote for relaxation at the in-house Richel D’Ambra Day Spa. The appeal: Ritz-Carlton’s elegance (Champagne at check-in, plush beds) meets local flavor (free peanut chews, architectural shout-outs to bank history). The best crib in the cradle of democracy? The Ritz-Carlton Suite, a 1,900-squarefoot, two-bedroom, two-bath oasis overlooking City Hall, starting at $4,900 a night. Insider tip: Try one of the mezcal cocktails at the Latin American-themed Aqimero, ideal with a seafood appetizer such as grilled octopus or ceviche. Good to know: Specify you want a room with a view at check-in. Wi-Fi is $12 a day, unless you’ve signed up for the Ritz Rewards program, while valet parking is $52. Walk or take advantage of the public transit (subway, bus and trolley) at your door. Details: 10 Avenue of the Arts, Philadelphia. (215) 523-8000, www.ritz carlton.com/philadelphia. Rooms from $339, suites from $529.
