Quakes lose goaltender and game

The Earthquake­s lost their goalkeeper, then lost the game in Columbus.

Ethan Finlay and Justin Meram scored and the Columbus Crew beat the San Jose Earthquake­s 2-0 on Saturday night.

Finlay put Meram’s wide cross into the right corner to open the scoring for the Crew (5-9-11) in the 32nd minute.

Meram added a goal in the 84th minute on a penalty kick he drew against San Jose defender Marvell Wynne. Meram then beat Andrew Tarbell, the backup goalkeeper who entered as a substitute late in the first half when starter David Bingham left with a back injury.

There was no word after the game about Bingham’s status.

San Jose dropped to 7-8-11. MLS highlights: Patrick Mullins scored three goals, Patrick Nyarko had a goal and two assists and host D.C. United beat the 10-man Chicago Fire 6-2 . ... Roland Alberg had a goal and an assist in the host Philadelph­ia Union’s 2-0 victory over nine-man Sporting Kansas City. Philadelph­ia (11-9-7) has won three of its past four to move within a point of second-place New York City in the East . ... Ignacio Piatti scored in the 73rd minute and the visiting Montreal Impact beat Toronto FC 1-0 to end the Reds’ unbeaten streak at seven games . ... Michael Barrios scored two second-half goals and visiting FC Dallas beat the Houston Dynamo 3-1. ... The Vancouver Whitecaps and host Los Angeles Galaxy played to a scoreless draw. England: Substitute Marcus Rashford scored in the second minute of stoppage time to earn Manchester United a 1-0 win at Hull and a third straight victory to open the Premier League.

Also, Leicester and Arsenal, the top two teams last season, racked up their first wins. Jamie Vardy sent champion Leicester on its way to a 2-1 win over visiting Swansea. Alexis Sanchez was the inspiratio­n behind Arsenal’s 3-1 victory at Watford, earning a ninth-minute penalty converted by Santi Cazorla, scoring himself, then setting up Mesut Ozil for the third goal before halftime.

Tottenham and Liverpool drew 1-1 in a frenetic match, and Everton kept up its unbeaten start under new coach Ronald Koeman by beating Stoke 1-0, courtesy of a penalty from Leighton Baines that struck the post, hit goalkeeper Shay Given on the head, and rebounded in. Italy: Juventus won 1-0 at Lazio in a Serie A match dedicated to the victims of the earthquake in central Italy.

Fans held aloft banners to mourn the nearly 300 people killed in Wednesday’s quake, and a minute of silence was observed before kickoff. Also, Lazio’s shirts featured a message that read “Noi con voi” — “We’re with you” — including an image of the clock tower in the hardest-hit town of Amatrice, which was stopped at 3:36 a.m. when the quake hit.

Amatrice and other towns affected are in the Lazio region.

Also, Arkadiusz Milik and Jose Callejon each scored twice for Napoli in a 4-2 win over visiting AC Milan. Spain: Toni Kroos’ late score helped Real Madrid, playing without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, win its home opener over feisty Celta Vigo 2-1. Solo on leave: Hope Solo has taken an indefinite leave from the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League, less than a week after being suspended for six months by the U.S. national team for disparagin­g remarks about Sweden.
