Scully’s finale set for S.F.

- By John Shea John Shea is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

Vin Scully said Tuesday he won’t broadcast the Dodgers in the postseason, meaning the final broadcast of Scully’s celebrated career will be Oct. 2 in San Francisco.

“That really brings it full circle,” Giants broadcaster Jon Miller said.

Scully, 88, grew up in New York a Giants fan and began following them as a child when walking home from school and noticing on a storefront the score of a game that day: Yankees 18, Giants 4.

It was Game 2 of the World Series. Oct. 2, 1936.

Scully recalled the moment in a 2014 Chronicle interview: “As a little kid, I said, ‘Oh, those poor Giants.’ That’s how I became a Giants fan, as God is my judge.”

It’s appropriate, then, that his final game will be Dodgers-Giants.

“He’ll do a Giants game 80 years to the day later,” Miller said. “I’m figuring probably the best possible scenario would be for the Giants to win that game big time in following that full-circle idea.”

Scully’s reason for retiring after the Oct. 2 game? “Otherwise,” he told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday, “I’d be saying goodbye like in grand opera, where you say goodbye 12 different times.”

It wasn’t news to Miller, who said Scully informed Giants broadcasters of his plan during the Giants’ series at Dodger Stadium, Aug. 23-25.

“I told him, ‘Well, speaking on behalf of baseball fans everywhere, when (the Dodgers) make the postseason, I hope you change your mind and just come back and do the games,’ ” Miller said.

Scully, who walked to the Polo Grounds as a kid, was a fan of Giants Hall of Famer Mel Ott and calls Willie Mays the greatest player he has seen, began calling Dodgers games in 1950. Scully’s 67th and final year in the booth has been an emotional whirlwind, people of all generations saying goodbye.

“He said it’s been a lot of fun. He’s enjoyed it,” Miller said. “But if he goes into the postseason, he feels, ‘Well, I’ve already (said farewell) and I’m still here doing it.’ If they win the first round, he’s doing it again. He just felt he wanted to make a clean break.”

Scully’s final game at Dodger Stadium will be Sept. 25.
