Officers on trial: Albuquerque police overreacted during a 2014 standoff with a homeless man armed with knives and then intentionally killed him, a special prosecutor said Monday as the long-awaited murder trial of two former officers got under way. It appeared from police video that James Boyd was preparing to surrender when authorities opened fire in March 2014. The situation unraveled as a flash grenade went off near Boyd — who authorities say had paranoid schizophrenia. He reached for two pocket knives and was shot seconds later. Nowretired Keith Sandy and former Officer Dominique Perez are charged with second-degree murder. Their lawyers say they opened fire to protect other officers closest to Boyd. The shooting sparked unrest in Albuquerque that shut down streets and City Hall.

Shark attacks: Three surfers suffered shark bites in separate attacks over a threehour period in the same area at New Smyrna Beach, Fla. The attacks began Sunday morning when the Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue agency said a 43-year-old man was bitten on the lower leg while surfing. About a half hour later, a 36year-old old man was bitten on the hands. Both were hospitalized. Two hours later, the agency said a 16-yearold boy was bitten on his inner thigh. He had only a minor injury and wasn’t taken to the hospital.

Hit and run: A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a hit-andrun driver in Pomona (Los Angeles County), police said. Sgt. Ryan Rodriguez said the crash happened late Sunday on a commercial street near downtown. The victim died at the scene. His name was not immediately released. Police have not released a description of the suspect’s vehicle.

Building evacuated: A backpack filled with clothes and left in a trashcan caused the evacuation Monday of a federal building in downtown Atlanta. Deputy U.S. Marshal Gretchen Fortin said a security officer at the Richard B. Russell Federal Building and Courthouse noticed a backpack in a trashcan outside an employee entrance during a patrol around 9:30 a.m. Fortin said the backpack and a tote bag that was underneath it were removed from the trashcan by a bomb robot and were X-rayed before they were opened. Both bags contained clothing. People were evacuated from the building and surrounding streets were blocked off for about two hours.

Runway mishap: A flight heading to Reno rolled off the runway at Denver International Airport while getting ready to take off. The airport said no one was injured when United Flight 296 veered into a grassy area while taxiing Sunday evening. Passenger Mike Higdon, a reporter at the Reno Gazette-Journal, said the engines roared loudly and the plane slowed before stopping suddenly. He said the pilot told those on board that as the plane approached the runway, its brakes wouldn’t work so he used the emergency reverse engines to keep it from going into a ditch. The passengers were taken by bus to the concourse.
