Player of Week Davis out with a bug

- By Susan Slusser Susan Slusser is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

Khris Davis, named the AL Player of the Week one day earlier, was scratched from Oakland’s lineup with a stomach ailment Tuesday.

Davis had hoped to play, manager Bob Melvin said, but wasn’t recovered enough Tuesday afternoon to stay in the lineup. Danny Valencia took Davis’ spot, batting cleanup and playing right field, with Jake Smolinski moving from right to left.

Davis hit five homers last week and has 40 for the season, most by an A’s player since Jason Giambi hit 43 in 2000. Davis has 99 RBIs, most by an Oakland player since Frank Thomas drove in 114 in 2006. Vogt recognized: Stephen Vogt will be awarded the Dave Stewart Award for community service Wednesday, becoming the first player to receive the honor more than once. Vogt and his wife, Alyssa, are major supporters of the School of Imagination, which has programs for special-needs children, visiting the school regularly and helping with fundraising.

“My wife and I are so blessed to be able to give back to the local community and surrounding areas,” Vogt said. “To get more recognition for the School of Imagination is why we do this.

“We have a great group of guys in here who are doing a lot of good things; unfortunately those are things that never get talked about. The negative things get brought up a lot more than what we’re doing in the community, but we have a duty to give back any way we can.” Alvarez has surgery: Starter Henderson Alvarez had his second shoulder surgery in two years, putting his return to pitching in doubt. Dr. James Andrews performed a biceps tenodesis procedure (re-attaching the tendon in a different spot) on Alvarez’ right shoulder and he removed some cartilage.

Alvarez is likely to be nontendered this winter. Briefly: Melvin said Sonny Gray (forearm, elbow soreness) threw a 48-pitch bullpen session and will face hitters this weekend . ... Reliever J.B. Wendelken (forearm) is not expected to pitch again this season.
